Income Tax Preparation

Andrew R Jerome PLLC is currently accepting new clients, and a free initial consultation is available to determine if Andrew R Jerome is a good fit to meet your tax return preparation needs.

All new and returning clients will receive an estimate of tax preparation fees prior to  the preparation of any tax return.

If an in person meeting is desired, please call or email as soon as reasonably possible to set an appointment.  Appointment times are limited during early to mid-April in an attempt to complete and file as many returns as possible by April 15.  Mobile appointments are available for clients or prospective clients who have difficulty traveling -- including clients in Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline, and Lake Forest Park, as well as clients living in other parts of northwest Washington state.

Every effort will be made to complete tax returns in a timely manner.  To this end, effort will be made to complete each tax return within two weeks from receipt of all information needed to complete the return.  Less voluminous returns are often completed within 2-5 days from receipt of all information needed for completion.  Further, even if tax materials aren't provided until early April, effort will be made to complete as many Form 1040s as possible by April 15.  It is a firm belief of Andrew R. Jerome PLLC that clients who are diligent and provide all tax materials needed to complete their Form 1040 by March 31st should not be burdened with an extension, and instead should receive a completed tax return by April 15.

It is often asked: How should Clients provide tax materials, and what is the best way to organize tax materials? All tax practitioners vary in regard to the desired format of tax materials.  A few things that can help in regard to the efficiency of preparing your return:

1.  STAPLES.  Staples are the enemy of tax preparation. Try to implement a zero-staple policy as much as possible.  The fewer times tax materials are stapled, the easier and quicker it is to review materials and prepare a tax return.
2.  PDFs vs. PRINTED PAGES.  PDFs are great, but photocopies of documents are just as good.  It is easier and more efficient to review a stack of 15 photocopied pages versus opening and reviewing 15 different pdfs.  When creating pdfs, it is much more efficient to create a few large pdfs versus many small pdfs.
3.  QUICKBOOKS vs. OTHER RECORD KEEPING. Tax information certainly can be provided on handwritten sheets, typed pages, or in excel.  QuickBooks or similar programs are not required.  The key is to provide a summary of relevant tax information in an organized format.  If QuickBooks is not properly organized, it can take substantially longer to review information in QuickBooks versus reviewing information on handwritten sheets, typed pages, or in excel.
4.  COMPLETENESS of MATERIALS.  To the extent possible, please forward copies (pdf or photocopies) of all W-2s, all 1099s, all 1098s, and all K-1s.  It is important for tax preparers to review these exact forms before completing tax returns.  K-1s can be voluminous, but it is important to review K-1s in their entirety to prepare an accurate and complete tax return.

IRS Disputes and IRS Notices

Over the past few years IRS has developed a pattern of mailing notices to taxpayers indicating there is some problem with Form 1040.  These "nastygram" notices can be cryptic and seemingly undecipherable.  Do not ignore these notices.  These notices can at times contain inconsistencies; hence at times additional sums are not due and owing to IRS even though purported to be due and owing by the IRS notice.  However, even if inapplicable, a response to these IRS notices must be made in writing to avoid IRS collection attempts.  Please call or email if you want to discuss your options regarding an IRS Notice.   Mobile appointments are available for clients or prospective clients who have difficulty traveling --  including clients in Mountlake Terrace, Shoreline, and Lake Forest Park, as well as clients living in other parts of northwest Washington.

In addition, please note that IRS will not contact taxpayers on the telephone or by email regarding a problem with Form 1040.  All legitimate IRS communications will be mailed.  If you receive a phone call or email regarding a problem with Form 1040 or a problem with another federal tax form, it is very likely a scam.  These fraudulent telephone calls and emails are becoming more and more prevalent.  If you receive a phone call or email from someone claiming to be with IRS, it is a good idea to call IRS and confirm at 1-800-829-1040.  IRS also has additional information regarding fraudulent phone calls, fraudulent emails, and identity theft at www. irs.gov
